On the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on 12 June, the Malaz Foundation for Women\u2019s Support reaffirms that child labour remains one of the most serious violations affecting children worldwide. It has long-lasting negative impacts on their rights to education, health, and healthy development, while also undermining opportunities for sustainable economic and social development in the long term.<\/p>\n
The Foundation emphasized that eliminating child labour requires more than the enforcement of laws and labour market regulations. It also demands addressing the root causes that push families to send their children into the workforce, including poverty, school dropout, weak social protection systems, and economic crises that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable households.<\/p>\n
Malaz stressed that the Egyptian Constitution guarantees children protection from all forms of economic exploitation and from work that may harm their health, education, or development. Furthermore, the Child Law criminalizes many forms of unlawful child employment. Nevertheless, the continued involvement of children in hazardous, arduous, or age-inappropriate work highlights the need for greater governmental and societal efforts to ensure the effective implementation of existing legislation.<\/p>\n
The Foundation noted that Egypt is a party to several binding international agreements related to protecting children from economic exploitation, most notably the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 138 concerning the Minimum Age for Admission to Employment and Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which affirms every child\u2019s right to protection from economic exploitation and from any work that is hazardous, interferes with education, or harms their health and development.<\/p>\n
Malaz further highlighted that the issue of protecting children from child labour and economic exploitation has been addressed within the recommendations made to Egypt during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process. Several states called upon Egypt to continue strengthening measures aimed at protecting children, expanding social protection coverage, ensuring equitable access to quality education, and enhancing the enforcement of laws protecting children from exploitation and hazardous work.<\/p>\n
The Foundation underscored that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education and Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, is closely linked to eliminating child labour and ensuring that children remain within the educational system. Education remains the most effective tool for breaking cycles of intergenerational poverty and advancing social justice.<\/p>\n
