On the occasion of International Widows’ Day, Malaz Foundation for Women's Support affirms that the suffering of widows does not end with the loss of a spouse. In many cases, it marks the beginning of a new journey filled with economic, social, and psychological challenges that may push many women into poverty and vulnerability, particularly as they assume sole responsibility for providing for their families and raising their children.
The Foundation believes that addressing widows’ issues solely through the lens of aid and charitable assistance is no longer sufficient. Instead, a more comprehensive approach is needed—one that is based on economic empowerment, social protection, and the safeguarding of rights. Such an approach would enable widows to participate fully in public and economic life as partners in development and key contributors to stability within their families and communities.
Malaz Foundation emphasizes that widows constitute a significant segment of women heads of households in Egypt, and that many of them face complex challenges, including limited access to decent employment opportunities, difficulties in securing stable sources of income, increasing childcare responsibilities, and societal attitudes that may subject them to isolation or stigma, thereby restricting their integration and active participation in society.
Empowering widows is not an act of charity; it is a direct investment in the future of families and communities. A woman who has a sustainable source of income and fair access to employment and training opportunities is better equipped to protect her family from poverty and provide a safe and stable environment for her children, ultimately contributing to long-term economic and social development.
In this context, the Malath Foundation for Women’s Support calls for strengthening national policies and programs that support widows, expanding opportunities for vocational training and rehabilitation and economic empowerment, and ensuring their access to social, health and legal services without discrimination or obstacles, in addition to spreading community awareness of the importance of respecting widows’ rights and rejecting stereotypes that hinder their integration into society.
The Foundation further underscores that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires a more equitable response to the needs of widowed women—one grounded in respect for human dignity, equal opportunities, and genuine empowerment, ensuring that widows can enjoy lives that are dignified, secure, and independent.
