Civil society is considered one of the fundamental pillars for building a modern state and promoting the values of democracy and active citizenship. The more civil society organizations develop in terms of structure, diversity, and independence, the more society’s institutional capacity for dialogue, critique, and accountability grows. The increasing attention to the role of civil society stems from a growing recognition that building democracy is not limited to elections and constitutional institutions alone, but also depends on the existence of an open public sphere through which citizens can participate and freely and responsibly express their views.
