Youth participation in public life is a key indicator of the inclusiveness and fairness of any society, and a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development based on rights and citizenship. Young people are directly affected by public decisions and policies, and they have the potential to contribute effectively to the development of their communities.
The concept of participation has evolved in recent years, now encompassing volunteer work, local initiatives, engagement in community dialogue, and contributing to public issues at the local level, free from any political bias. This shift reflects a growing awareness that participation is a daily practice linked to social justice and quality of life.
However, youth participation faces challenges related to access to knowledge, the lack of safe spaces, and economic and social pressures, which sometimes leads to a decline in engagement or limiting participation to limited and unsustainable activities.
From a human rights perspective, participation cannot be separated from the rights to freedom of expression, freedom of association, access to information, and equal opportunities. Ensuring these rights is fundamental to empowering young people to engage effectively and responsibly in their communities, translating their concern for public issues into concrete action that positively impacts their lives and society.
